Greer Rising and Eileen Martin

Both Greer and Eileen retired to Colorado from careers with the U.S. federal government. They have been married for 22 years and are collaborating on the book. In Greer’s family letters, Lanham bares his soul, and studying Lanham unlocks the private language he and Hemingway used in their prolific correspondence. These best pals were pretty crafty, using doublespeak, code words and insider phrases to keep their exchanges private.

Greer and Eileen spent years tracking international outlaws, money trails and underground networks, and they are using these skills to piece together a story of Buck and Ernie to show new facets of Hemingway and his best friend. Greer was a border and non-proliferation expert, and is a photographer whose work can be seen at gsrising.photoshelter.com. Eileen was a senior executive in the Central Intelligence Agency’s clandestine service, where she served for 33 years developing and leading worldwide intelligence collection programs. When not working on the project, Greer and Eileen head to the mountains or out with their camper, and link up with family as often as possible.

Here we are in Chicago after presenting the previously-unpublished Hemingway poem at the American Literature Association conference.
